AB OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the morphological and ultra-structure alteration
of the cells composing the SK lesion. Nuclear bodies could be seen in
spindle-cell and undifferentiated endothelial cell as intranuclear
structures. METHODS: Biopsies from AIDS associated Kaposi's sarcoma were
obtained from 11 patients not previously treated for KS, and not having
opportunistic infection at the time of biopsy. The skin fragments of
Kaposi's sarcoma were processed as usually for light and electron
microscopy. RESULTS: Light microscopy showed typical hysthopathology for
KS. Electron-microscopy studies has shown the presence of nuclear bodies
in spindle-like cells and undifferentiated endothelial cells from two
patients. Both patients who had showed nuclear bodies were men,
homosexual at the age of 25 and 31 years. The lesions were typical skin
nodules involving the trunk. These intracellular structures were seen as
spherical particles measuring 0.8 to 1.2 micrometer in diameter. At
higher magnification they looked like a spiral array of double membrane.
CONCLUSIONS: Nuclear bodies are old organelles described 30 years ago.
Its role however is yet to discovered, but it has been associated with
the degree of cellular activity after some kind of stimulus.
